Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or “organic” search results. Our goal is for your site to be closer to the top result (higher ranked on the serps). We also want it to appear more frequently in the search results list. This in turn will bring more visitors from search traffic (search engine users). SEO may concentrate on different kinds of search, including image, local, video, academic, news and industry-specific vertical search engines.
Types of SEO
There are two major types of search engine optimization, on site and off site. These can be performed in one of two ways, white hat search engine optimization (the ‘good’ kind) which follows the search engine rules, and black hat (the ‘not so good’ kind) that can be done on and off site and can lead to penalties. There are of course differing opinions about the nature of each type of SEO.
Keep in mind that SEO takes time. There is no secret SEO pill. You won’t see improvements overnight, so don’t be discouraged if your traffic doesn’t jump through the roof right away. Also, don’t expect to use search engine optimization strategy once and then forget about it. Make it a practice to keep SEO in mind whenever you update your website, go through a redesign, or plan a new site. Also, keyword popularity and competitiveness changes over time, so revisit your targeted keywords periodically to see if they still draw traffic.
